Frances Seward's abstract landscape photography for healing.

I am going to be taking a trip to the UK next week to see my father.  He is 88 years old and ailing faster than we thought!  I have lived in the States 12 years and it is now that I feel I need to be there during his last months.  I cannot go for long since I have a 6 year old and another on the way.  It is a hard time for me and something I have been anticipating for a while.  I must remember to think of my imagery especially those that are particularly peaceful since some have more energy than others.  These are the pieces I think about:

Please click on the link above.  The weather has been extremely hot these last 3 weeks or so.  Hotter than usual and in the past couple of days the monsoons have started giving us and the plants much relief!

Trip to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park

Recently I came back from a very inspiring trip to Arches National Park and Canyonlands.  I only had three days there and so I fitted in long days and even into the night so that I could see as much as possible.  It was an incredible time.  I felt like I was going back in time to the beginning of time for instance descending into the canyon of Canyonlands towards Green River - descending into rocks millions of years old and as you descend the rocks get older.  HUGE Rocks all in disarray uplifted and fallen by volcanoes and earthquakes haphazardly to form this wonderful creation.  Nature's creations over millions of years.  I ventured into Needles which has the most imposing entrance I have ever seen - huge mesas with beautiful carvings as if created by an artist of the Renaissance as well as pyramid like structures as if I were in Egypt or Mexico.  I was in awe for the whole trip and photos cannot convey the size of these places in the Southwest.  I sat under one structure under the stars and half a moon called Courthouse at Arches in pure darkness and felt the imposing energy of this structure.  It is the second photograph above.

Here are some of my images of the trip:

Retired Professor from the Corcoran School Of Art features my abstract landscapes.

I am delighted and honored that the retired Professor of Photography from The Cocoran School Of Art - Joe Cameron featured one of my pieces on his blog.  What he said about my work:

'My influences are more likely to be abstract painters than photographers. So I quite naturally was charmed by the poetic and abstract nature of your photographs'.

On Rothko

One of the the most influencial artists for me is Mark Rothko.  I love the simplicity of his work and yet his work is emotionally powerful and complex on a monumental level.  When I visited his works at the Tate in London in 2010 I stood quite close to his paintings and I literally was swaying, hypnotised - every movement in his brushstrokes is deliberate, alive and symbolic.  I get his work.  I think Rothko is a genius as many others do and I am so happy he created all these monumental paintings.  I haven't found a painter like him who has had such an effect on me.  The experience is all there before you and you never know what may come up for you when you take the time to stand or sit infront of one of these environments for at least a half hour:  more like all day for me!!  I am including some of his images below though a small image does not do them justice.  It is just an introduction to his work.

Thank you for taking a look!  The last picture is taken at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, TX.
